Most algae problems are not caused by “bad water” or “cheap filters.” They are caused by Human Generosity.
We think: “I love my plants, so I will give them lots of light!” So we turn the light on when we wake up (7:00 AM) and turn it off when we sleep (11:00 PM). That is 16 hours of light. In nature, even the sun isn’t that strong for that long. You are basically cooking your tank into an algae farm.
Scenario: A customer comes in with a sample of water. It looks like Green Tea.
- Customer: “Boss, sell me the strongest Algae Killer chemical you have.”
- Me: “I won’t sell you poison. I want you to go to Mr. DIY and buy a RM15 Timer.”
The customer is confused. But the truth is, Light Control is Algae Control.
The Mistake: The “Human Schedule”
We want to see our fish when we are awake.
- 7:00 AM: Wake up, turn on tank light.
- 6:00 PM: Come home from work, feed fish.
- 11:00 PM: Go to sleep, turn off tank light.
Total Time: 16 Hours. Result:
- Hours 1–8: Plants are happy and photosynthesizing.
- Hours 9–16: Plants are “full.” They stop eating light. But the light is still on. Algae sees this free energy and takes over.
The Fix: The 6-Hour Rule
If you are a beginner with a new tank (0–3 months old), your plants are still adjusting. They cannot handle intense light. Limit your light to 6 hours maximum per day.
“But Boss, if I only run it for 6 hours, the tank is dark when I come home!” That is why you need the Siesta Method.
The “Siesta” Hack (The Split Schedule)
In Malaysia, our houses are hot. Algae loves Heat + Light. To fight this, we split the lighting period into two chunks with a “nap” in the middle.
The Magic Schedule:
- Block 1 (Morning): 8:00 AM – 11:00 PM (3 Hours)
- Why: So you can see your fish while drinking coffee before work.
- The Siesta (Off): 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Dark/Room Light)
- Why: This is the hottest part of the day. Turning the light off keeps the water cooler. It also disrupts the algae’s life cycle.
- Block 2 (Evening): 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM (4 Hours)
- Why: So you can enjoy the tank when you get home from work.
Total Light: 7 Hours. Result: You get to see your fish in the morning and evening, but you skip the “wasteful” hours when nobody is home.
Why The “Siesta” Kills Algae
Algae is a simple organism. It needs continuous, uninterrupted light to build momentum. Plants are complex. They can “store” energy and adapt to a break. By turning the lights off in the middle of the day, you are essentially “resetting” the algae’s growth clock, while your plants just take a nap and resume later.
The Hardware: Analog vs. Smart
You don’t need fancy gear.
- Option A: The Analog Timer (RM15 – RM20)
- Where: Mr. DIY, Hardware shops.
- Pros: Bulletproof. Never disconnects from WiFi. Cheap.
- Cons: Makes a tiny “ticking” sound.
- Option B: The Smart Plug (RM30 – RM50)
- Where: Shopee (Tuya, Tapo).
- Pros: Control from your phone. Can set complex schedules.
- Cons: If your WiFi goes down, sometimes the schedule gets messed up.
The Shop Guy’s Take
Stop trusting your memory. You will forget to turn off the lights one night, and you will wake up to an algae bloom. Buy a timer. It is the single best investment for a planted tank.
Rule of Thumb:
- Week 1-4: 6 Hours Total.
- Week 4+: Increase to 8 Hours if no algae appears.
- Never exceed 10 hours unless you are a pro with CO2.
