If you read any fishkeeping book or watch a YouTube video from the USA, the first rule they tell you is:
“You MUST buy a heater.”
So, you go to the shop in Petaling Jaya or Penang, you buy a heater, you stick it in your tank… and two weeks later, your fish are dead or gasping for air.
Here is the local reality that Western guides don’t understand:
We live in the heater.
The Malaysian Advantage (28°C is Standard)
Guppies are tropical fish. They originate from South America, near the equator—just like Malaysia.
- Ideal Guppy Temperature: 24°C – 28°C.
- Average Room Temperature in Malaysia: 27°C – 30°C.
In 90% of Malaysian homes, your water is already at the perfect temperature naturally. Adding a heater to a tank that sits in a warm living room is dangerous. It pushes the water to 31°C or 32°C. At that heat, oxygen levels drop, bacteria multiply faster, and fish metabolism burns out.
The Only 3 Times You Actually Need a Heater
There are exceptions. You might actually need a heater if:
1. The “Air-Con” Room
If your tank is in an office or bedroom where the air-conditioner is blasting at 18°C for 10 hours a day, your water will get too cold.
- The Risk: Rapid temperature swings (Cold at night, Hot during the day). This causes White Spot (Ich).
- The Fix: Set a small heater to 26°C just to keep it stable at night.
2. The “Monsoon” Season (Rainy Days)
During the heavy rainy season (like December in the East Coast), temperatures can drop suddenly to 23°C or 24°C at night.
While this won’t kill guppies, it can stress them or trigger fungal diseases. A heater set to low (25°C) acts as a safety net.
3. The “Sick Ward”
If your fish has Ich (White Spot) or Velvet, you need heat.
Parasites die faster in warm water. In this specific case, we use a heater to push the temp to 30°C intentionally for a few days. But this is a medical treatment, not a permanent setup.
The Real Killer: The Fan
In Malaysia, we usually have the opposite problem: Heat.
Instead of a heater, most Malaysian guppy keepers need a Cooling Fan.
If your tank is near a window or if you live on the top floor of a condo, your water might hit 32°C.
- Signs of Overheating: Fish gasping at the surface, sluggish movement, plants melting.
- The Solution: Don’t buy a chiller (expensive). Just clip a small USB fan to blow across the water surface. Evaporation can drop the temperature by 2°C – 3°C, which is life-saving.
Summary: The “Malaysian Rule”
| Your Room Situation | Do you need a heater? |
| Standard Living Room (Fan only) | ❌ NO. (Dangerous) |
| Air-Con Room (24/7) | ✅ YES. (Set to 25°C) |
| Air-Con Room (Night only) | ✅ YES. (Prevent swings) |
| Outdoor Pond / Balcony | ❌ NO. (Nature handles it) |
Final Verdict
Stop following advice meant for people living in snow.
In Malaysia, save your money on the heater and spend it on a better filter or high-quality food. Your guppies will thank you for not boiling them.
