You see a baby catfish in the shop. It has a cute, flat head, long white whiskers, and a bright red tail. It looks clumsy and friendly. It’s smiling at you.
The shopkeeper says, “This one good. Eat leftover food. Good friend for your Arowana.”
Do not be fooled by that smile. The Red Tail Catfish (RTC) is not a friend. It is a biological vacuum cleaner with a mouth exactly the width of its body.
Here is why this South American giant is known as the “Garbage Disposal” of the aquarium world.
1. The “1 Inch Per Week” Rule
Most fish grow slowly. An Arowana takes years to reach full size.
The Red Tail Catfish breaks the laws of physics.
In the first year of its life, a healthy RTC can grow 1 inch every single week.
You buy a 3-inch baby in January. By Christmas, you have a 2-foot monster.
Eventually, they grow to 4 to 5 feet long and weigh 40kg+.
If you put one in a standard 4-foot tank, it will literally be unable to turn around within 18 months.
2. “If It Fits, It’s Food”
This is the Golden Rule of the Red Tail Catfish.
They are not aggressive hunters like the Snakehead. They are opportunistic gluttons.
They have poor eyesight but an incredible sense of smell. They roam the tank at night with their giant mouth open.
- The Danger: If a fish fits in that mouth, it will disappear.
- The Tragedy: I have heard countless stories of owners waking up to find their expensive 10-inch Koi or Arowana missing, and the Red Tail Catfish sitting in the corner with a massive, suspicious bulge in its stomach.
3. The “Arowana Tank Mate” Myth
In Malaysia, it is popular to keep an Arowana at the top and an RTC at the bottom.
This can work, but only if you are an expert.
- The Risk: If the RTC grows faster than the Arowana (which it usually does), the Arowana becomes a snack.
- The Waste: These fish produce massive amounts of poop. A single RTC produces more waste than 50 Goldfish. Unless you have industrial-grade filtration (like a pond sump), your water quality will crash, killing your expensive Arowana.
4. It Will Swallow Your Decor
It sounds like a joke, but it happens. These fish are so greedy they often swallow aquarium heaters, filter pipes, or large rocks that smell like food.
This often kills the fish or requires surgery to remove.
5. The Alternative: Pictus Catfish
If you love the look of a silver catfish with long whiskers but don’t want a monster, get the Pictus Catfish.
- Size: Grows to 5 inches.
- Look: Silver body, black spots, long white whiskers.
- Personality: Active, fast, and won’t eat your family pets.
The Red Tail Catfish is like a Great Dane dog. It is lovable, it has personality, and you can even hand-feed it. But you wouldn’t keep a Great Dane in a small apartment.
Unless you have a 1,000-gallon pond ready for it, leave the “smiling” catfish in the shop.
